I tend to use the plate loader for doing static holds (timed), since reps cause
too much friction on the fingers and it's possible to cheat.
I find finger curls with a barbell causes about 50%less friction and you
can still lift as much as on a plate loader.
My favoured piece of equipment has got to be the pinch gripper, this causes
virtually no friction and can exercise fingers as well as thumb.
For wrists though nothing beats wrist curls and rolling thunder handle on
a pulley system. afro
