Is there a benefit to having the bar elevated like this, it looks very awkward?

Yeah m8, i imagine it would be a lot more comfortable at waist height.

Tried it but prefer more fluid wrist curls (pulleys) - rigid bar movements seem to aggrevate old injuries for me.

wrist roller is a much different movement to a db wrist curl, but both are great for AW.
For wrist roller in a rack like this, I'd reccomend having the bar at your normal squat height. It will engage your shoulders more.
I use a 2.5inch tube, but I reckon you could use upto 4inch. This excercise is great to for pump, similar to full rom curls or orbigrip.

Cheers guys for your input. I'm thinking of building one and obviously want to make one which will benefit me the most. I understand that a low set up will allow me to concentrate on my wrists and forearms more as opposed to engaging my deltoids as well. (In your case Dean i don't need it low enough to work my calf muscles but thanks m8) One thing i will say about this particular workout though James is it will develop a lot more than just wrist strength as wrist curls are a static motion which doesn't engage the fingers at all. The wrist roller however allows the fingers to work in the motion by gripping and regripping.
